She made us feel like we were capable, natural parents, even when we felt clumsy and unsure.
We were in Joey’s care from June 23 to June 25 for the birth of our daughter, and Joey's impact on our experience as new parents was nothing short of profound. Entering the hospital to have a baby is a whirlwind of emotions, but we left the hospital with a sense of immense gratitude for having the opportunity to be in Joey’s care.
From the moment she took over our care, she created a bubble of calm and confidence around our new family of three. She didn't just teach us the basics of newborn care; she empowered us. With every diaper change, swaddle, and feeding, she was our patient guide, building our confidence one small victory at a time. Her words weren't just instructions; they were encouragement. She made us feel like we were capable, natural parents, even when we felt clumsy and unsure. One of the most incredible gifts she gave us was the gift of rest. Seeing our exhaustion, she insisted on taking our daughter to the nursery for a few hours across multiple nights so we could get some uninterrupted sleep. Waking up refreshed felt like a luxury we hadn't thought possible, and it made a world of difference in our ability to function and be present for our daughter. It was an act of profound compassion that we will never forget.
Our room was also frequently full of excited (and sometimes overwhelming) family members. Joey managed the crowd with incredible grace. She commanded the room in the most gentle way, expertly answering a barrage of questions while never making us or our family feel like an inconvenience. She was a master of communication and made everyone feel included and informed.
More than any single action, it was Joey’s constant kindness that defined our experience. In the raw, emotional, and vulnerable days after childbirth, her comforting presence was a lifeline. She celebrated our joys, soothed our anxieties, and cared for us not just as patients, but as a new family finding its way. We left the hospital with a beautiful, healthy daughter and, thanks to Joey, the confidence to begin our journey as parents. She is a truly extraordinary nurse who embodies the skill, compassion, and spirit of the DAISY Award. We cannot think of anyone more deserving.
