Latrissa provided extrordinary care, compassion and dedication during one of the worst sickle cell crisis of my life. She went above and beyond her role as a nurse, seeing me not only as a patient but as a whole person- emotionally, spirtually and mentally. Even when she wasn't assigned to my care, this nurse made it her duty to check on me, ensuring I felt supported and cared for.

In situations where others felt sitting in these painful, lonely four walls not seeing my young son for a month was a luxury and fun, she advocated for me and worked tirelessly to keep me comfortable as possible. She recognized the reality of my situation and validated the depth of my suffering. This nurse's empathy and compassion brightened some of my lowest, darkest days, and she showed a level of care that went far beyond the clinical duties of her job.

Many people can receive a degree, administer medication and go home to their families every night, but Latrissa is a nuturer and embodies the qualities every nurse should strive for but not everyone can provide the kind of holistic care that she does and that truly makes her exceptional. I know sickle cell is a complex disease no textbook can truly capture what we go through.

Although we're often viewed the same, if more nurses took the time as she does to understand the disease and the patients who live with, I believe more healing would take place. Her ability to see beyond the surface sets her apart. I am deeply grateful for everything she has done for me. I know her compassion and dedication will continue to carry her far in this profession. Thank you for being more than just a nurse. You are a healer.
