After he got up off the floor, Hyrum walked to each member of our family and hugged us and offered his deepest sympathies. This is something that will never leave my mind. The picture of him sitting on the floor with a man whose whole world had just been turned upside down and offering him a hug was above and beyond what his job entails.
There is one particular nurse who gave his whole heart to not only his patient but also our family. Hyrum was so kind, caring and sweet to my mother-in-law and our family.
My mother-in-law suffered severe brain trauma as the result of an accidental fall and never regained consciousness. Even though she was not able to communicate, Hyrum gave her the utmost respect.
When he was administering medications, he would talk to her like he was speaking to an old friend. He explained what medication he was giving, what it was for and that it was going to help her. He would speak and explain things to her as he was moving her head or adjusting any tube, wire, or IV. He gave her respect and dignity when it seemed as if our whole world was crashing and we could not ask for more.
On Wednesday after her MRI we learned the extent of damage to her brain. It was irreversible and the worst grade of injury that could have occurred. As we were all obviously heartbroken and in one of the worst possible days of our lives, Hyrum drew the curtain to give us privacy.
There were a limited number of chairs in the room, and my father-in-law just sank to the floor in tears after hearing the news. Hyrum came into the room, sat next to him on the floor of the ICU, and gave him a hug. Hyrum sat there for quite a while talking to my father-in-law, consoling him, and asking what he could do for him. After he got up off the floor, Hyrum walked to each member of our family and hugged us and offered his deepest sympathies. This is something that will never leave my mind. The picture of him sitting on the floor with a man whose whole world had just been turned upside down and offering him a hug was above and beyond what his job entails.
Hyrum is the type of person who gives his whole self to his job and his patients every single day. You don’t see that often. He strives to make a connection to both patients and families in a way I can’t explain, but have had the honor to experience. He listened to stories of my mother-in-law’s life and was interested in getting to know her as a person and not just as a patient sitting in a hospital bed.
ICU has to be one of the hardest nursing jobs around. I cannot imagine what a nurse experiences and sees daily. Hyrum tackles it with a sense of care and humility that is rare to see.
As a family, we would like to nominate Hyrum for the DAISY Award. His care, compassion, and heart for his patients and their families is something that should be noted and acknowledged. He gives selflessly and without a second thought during the worst days people are experiencing. Please consider Hyrum for this award as one of the best nurses we have and ever will have the pleasure of seeing in our lives.
