Jessica exemplified compassion, empathy, excellent communication, effective time management, and a commitment to patient advocacy, all while adapting to an evolving, difficult shift.
Jessica was assigned to a patient in labor who suffered from multiple mental health issues. From the beginning of the shift until the baby was delivered, this patient proved to be very challenging. The patient cried and screamed relentlessly for almost 8 hours. The patient had received an epidural prior to this shift and was fixated on the fact that she could move her legs and feel her cervix. Anesthesia was at the bedside multiple times to assess the patient. The patient was very angry and verbally assaulted the anesthesiologist as well as the OBGYN physician multiple times. The chaplain and the house supervisor visited the unit several times during the shift to offer support. No matter what anyone did or said, the patient continued to sob and scream at everyone who entered the room.
Jessica cared for this patient for the entire 12 hours of her shift. When offered to switch out, Jessica deferred due to what she believed was in the best interest of the patient. Jessica showed professionalism, compassion, empathy, and overall holistic insight while caring for this patient. I never heard her complain or talk negatively about the patient. She hustled around providing care for the patient, deferring her lunch until after 0400pm. Even after all she endured throughout the shift, when dinner was brought to the patient, she didn't receive a sweet tea like she requested. Jessica hustled down to the cafeteria to obtain this for the patient to ensure the patient was happy with her dinner. Jessica spent very little time out of the patient's room and endured a very emotionally taxing shift.
Jessica may never receive the thanks she deserves from her patient, but Jessica deserves to be acknowledged and thanked by her co-workers and the hospital she represents. Jessica not only made a difference in that patient's labor and delivery experience, but she also made an impact on me personally as her co-worker. Jessica exemplified compassion, empathy, excellent communication, effective time management, and a commitment to patient advocacy, all while adapting to an evolving, difficult shift. She was able to care for her patient with a balanced approach of clinical knowledge and emotional understanding. Jessica is a role model for our entire women's unit. Thank you, Jessica, for all you do for the labor and delivery community.
