He listened carefully as I explained my recent challenges, asked questions about my pain meds, and if I had any adverse reactions. Mark’s interest and insight were valuable.
I nominate Mark Evans, Nurse Navigator, for the DAISY Award. Mark was my nurse navigator for both procedures. I tremendously appreciated his calm, knowledgeable approach, which got me through several post-surgery issues last fall. Therefore, I was delighted and surprised when he came to visit me in admissions before my second surgery! Immediately post-surgery and throughout my entire four-day stay, I experienced tremendous pain in my femur. Mark, read my chart, and chose to visit me while I was in the hospital before I went home. He listened carefully as I explained my recent challenges, asked questions about my pain meds, and if I had any adverse reactions. Mark’s interest and insight were valuable. He promptly told the attending physician that I should drop the medication, which was causing dizziness and impairing my ability to walk. After I returned home, unprompted, Mark followed up with a call to check on my mobility and progress. I was delighted to report that I did not need the prescription pain meds and was getting by with Tylenol. His soothing Wisconsin accent and confidence in me, restored by motivation to ‘move often, yet minimally’ during this first week. Nursing is a science and an art. Mark excels at both and deserves recognition for his initiative, knowledge, and compassion. As digital technology advances specific sectors of medicine, exemplary professionals like Mark have a tremendous impact on positive patient outcomes through their compassion and competence.
