Kayce showed compassion and empathy to me and shared that whatever way I choose to feed my daughter is the best, and that it was not a reflection of who I am as a mother or how our relationship will be.
This was my first pregnancy, and I was worried the whole way through, but very excited to meet my daughter. Around 20 weeks, I noticed swelling in my BLLE and upper abd pain and sent a message via myhealth to the office and Kayce promptly responded-she was messaging me frequently and I know for sure she stayed late that day to give me a call to make sure I could check my blood pressure to make sure it is wasn’t elevated and got me scheduled to see the provider next day. Thankfully, I did not have preeclampsia. Kayce also did my NST at 35 weeks when my baby’s heart rate was slightly elevated. She made me feel comfortable and stress-free.
Where I really got to know Kayce was during my postpartum journey. I was struggling with breastfeeding and getting C to latch, so I had switched to pumping and felt guilty that I wasn’t successful in my journey. Kayce sent a plethora of resources and spent a lot of time with me in person, helping me to get my daughter to latch. At the end of the visit, I was in tears and shared with her that I was struggling with anxiety and feeling like a failure as a mother. Kayce showed compassion and empathy to me and shared that whatever way I choose to feed my daughter is the best, and that it was not a reflection of who I am as a mother or how our relationship will be. She also went out of her way to schedule an earlier appointment with my midwife, so I could get help sooner as I was struggling mentally. She made me feel safe and that I was not broken.
The day after our appointment, I felt really great and was in a good mood. I had a great morning with my husband and daughter. That night, I passed a piece of my placenta that was straggling behind post-delivery. It was very scary seeing a blood clot that large come out, and I went to the hospital. Kayce sent me a message on Monday morning to check on me, and I let her know what was going on. And she said that M informed her that I would need a D&C. Both M and Kayce made me feel very validated and wanted to get me help very quickly due to the feelings I was experiencing. I’m going to meet with a CNM/PMHNPS virtually soon. Both of them saw me that day and hugged me and reassured me that I was not failing, and that I did not overreact by calling 911 when the piece of my placenta passed. Kayce deserves a DAISY Award because she advocated for me the whole way through. I’m sure her job can be very emotionally taxing when she sees so many postpartum moms struggling or I imagine her doing NSTs on scared pregnant mothers and putting them at ease. Like Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Kayce made me feel confident when I was scared, reassured when I was anxious, and safe when I felt like everything was close to falling apart. She made a difference in my family’s life. Thank you!
