Coming in on time off to help a caregiver grieve was unexpected; however, it shows Luke's true character and love for patients and their families.
In the Bone Marrow Unit, patients need to come with a caregiver. It is a requirement to go on with the transplant that the veteran has someone to be with them 24/7. My husband J was sometimes a difficult patient for some. He liked to joke around and have fun, but when his PTSD would come out, he could be hard to get through to. Luke took time to learn from J. He had a very similar sense of humor to J, so they understood each other well. J appreciated Luke so much and appreciated how willing he was to help. J would often comment that he knew Luke would advocate for him, and he had the utmost trust in Luke. As a caregiver, I had to get to know nurses, too. I had to advocate for J and give information to nurses about J. I trusted Luke with any information about J. I knew Luke would take the information to discuss with J in a professional manner and get answers from J because of the relationship they had built. He would offer options and ideas to us (J when he could understand and me when I had to advocate for J), which allowed us to feel comfortable. Luke wasn’t afraid to give hard answers! I know I asked him plenty of questions that would not have been easy to answer. He always gave the answers honestly and in a way I could understand. J spent a great deal of time in the ICU. Even while in the ICU, Luke would come over on his breaks to just check on me. He would see if I had any questions that he could explain a bit better, or just chat with J while he was intubated. When the time came to pull J off life support, Luke was notified. Luke showed up to the ICU when he wasn’t working to sit with me for a while the night before. We talked about J. We remembered J. He sat with me while I cried, and he answered a lot of questions and advocated for J and me as much as he could in the worst moments of my life. Luke is an excellent nurse. Coming in on time off to help a caregiver grieve was unexpected; however, it shows Luke's true character and love for patients and their families. It shows his commitment to his job and compassion, and respect for others. The VA could use more nurses like Luke!
