I was in Decatur visiting my boyfriend all the way from South Carolina, when I underwent an emergency amputation of my right leg below the knee. Candy was my nurse during the majority of my stay there. She made me and my boyfriend feel comfortable, heard and connected with us on human level. Candy took the time answer all my questions and was very patient with me. She made me feel like I was the only patient in the world.

When I had questions she couldn't answer, she went above and beyond her job description to connect with the doctors and social workers. She didn't stop until she got answers for me. I always felt cared for and truly loved by her. She shared things with me and empathized in a way I have never experienced from a health care worker. I can tell that she is a nurse because she truly loves people and wants to selflessly serve them. She would often skip meals and breaks to ensure her patients were cared for. She deserves recognition for her service, passion and dedication.
