I don’t even feel like I’m there getting chemo; I feel like I am at a family cookout with him and his trainee, A.
My first “red devil” treatment was with Ryan. I have had him before, and he always makes the experience fun and exciting. I don’t even feel like I’m there getting chemo; I feel like I am at a family cookout with him and his trainee, A. Even on the days I didn’t have him as my nurse, A and he always made it a point to come find me and give me hugs and encouragement. This one was special, though. He and I had built a bond, and we had both hoped he would be the one to give me my first AC treatment. I was very nervous because of all of the things I had heard about this treatment. As I was sitting in the blue room, hoping and praying it would be him, Abby came and got me and said, "Let’s go see Ryan!" My mama and I had prayed about it and were so happy. My treatment went so smoothly. We were in the area with J as well, and it felt like we were at a family cookout. We were joking and laughing and cutting up. I pretty much forgot what I was there for. With the AC treatment, the nurse actually pushes that medication themself, and he made sure to tell me everything that was going on and what he was doing, and why. He is more than just a nurse to me now; he is family. Honestly, this was my first week I didn’t have to go for a treatment, and I missed them. Him, A, N, and J. I consider them all family now. It is very important to me that he gets recognition because I am 33 years old and I got diagnosed with cancer. I have been so hurt and scared by this, and now I’m honestly thankful in a way. I’ve met a great person that I will NEVER forget. He has turned this experience around for me, and instead of being miserable on the mornings I wake up for chemo, I am happy and excited to go spend time with family.
