I am honored to nominate this nurse for the DAISY Award in recognition of the nurse’s extraordinary compassion and dedication to patient care. 

This nurse recently cared for a veteran who was struggling with alcohol abuse, homelessness, and significant personal challenges. The patient was emotionally distressed and expressed concern about his belongings, which were left at a nearby Motel 6. He feared they would be discarded if not retrieved promptly. 

This nurse went above and beyond to support this patient. The nurse communicated with kindness and empathy, ensuring the patient received everything he needed before being discharged. When the patient was unable to wait for hospital-arranged transportation, the nurse personally helped him gather his belongings, assisted him in cleaning up, and escorted him safely out of the hospital. Most notably, the nurse paid for the patient’s Uber ride out of his pocket to ensure he reached his destination without delay. 

This act of kindness is just one example of how this nurse consistently demonstrates compassion. The nurse routinely goes out of his way to ensure patients receive the highest standard of care, even at his own expense. Just today, as I write this, another veteran returned to our unit using a cane, walking slowly but smiling, just to express his gratitude and share that this nurse had provided him with exceptional care. 

This nurse embodies the spirit of nursing and is truly deserving of the DAISY Award. I sincerely wish more nurses carried the same heart and compassion that this nurse brings to his patients every day.
