Professor Elkins is more than an educator; she is a pillar in the nursing education community.
Professor Rubie Elkins, a beloved and respected nursing educator, retired from Malcolm X College in December 2019 after over three decades of service to the City Colleges of Chicago. Known for her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to students, Professor Elkins left an indelible mark on generations of practical and registered nurses.

A proud graduate of the DePaul University School of Nursing, Professor Elkins earned both her Bachelor's and Master of Science degrees in Nursing. Her teaching journey began at Kennedy-King College, where she instructed LPN students with a firm yet compassionate approach. She went on to teach in the practical nursing program at Dawson Technical Institute, then served in the associate degree program at Olive-Harvey College before joining Malcolm X College in 2010.

Professor Elkins specialized in Obstetric Nursing, where her expertise, empathy, and ability to translate complex concepts into meaningful, practical learning made her a favorite among students. Her down-to-earth nature and approachable presence made her a mentor not only to learners but to her colleagues as well.

Beyond the classroom, she is a joyful travel enthusiast whose curiosity about the world reflects the same openness and generosity she brought to her teaching.

Professor Elkins is more than an educator; she is a pillar in the nursing education community. Her legacy of excellence and compassion lives on in the countless nurses she helped shape. We thank her for her extraordinary service to the City Colleges of Chicago and to the profession of nursing.
