Her presence made me feel safe, calmed me down, and I knew she was working with me and for me with the whole team. I have never trusted anyone more than on that day to do what I needed to keep me safe.
I was being induced as a surrogate at 22 weeks gestation for severe preeclampsia- a life threatening pregnancy condition and the baby was not going to be resuscitated. All day, my body was having a hard time with the process from multiple blood pressure drops, general feelings of not feeling well, to after the baby was born stillborn, I proceeded to hemorrhage from a placenta issue.
April was by my side, through every bump - holding my hand, advocating for me to have the best care, calling a rapid at one point when my vitals were in the toilet and I felt like something was seriously wrong. She was vigilant in getting me the proper care, the right medical staff in the room and advocating for me to turn my magnesium down, getting me blood pressure support meds and even huddling with the provider team before delivery to anticipate a hemorrhage. She worked very closely with the doctor, the charge nurse, and OB stat nurse to ensure my safety that day. I did indeed have a severe postpartum hemorrhage of nearly 3L of blood that day, and again, as my primary nurse, I know she was advocating and being my voice when I couldn’t work with the team to save my life. I am home with my family, my two beautiful little girls because of the fast acting, well trained staff that worked together to take all the necessary steps to stop me from bleeding. I will never forget the way she held my hand as tears rolled down my face, when I was so scared that something really bad was going to happen to me. Her presence made me feel safe, calmed me down, and I knew she was working with me and for me with the whole team. I have never trusted anyone more than on that day to do what I needed to keep me safe. I owe that team, but especially April, my life.
This wasn’t just a hard day for me; she also spent compassionate time with the intended parents, knowing this was a heavy day of grief for them. They spoke very fondly of her and how she helped walk them through the process of the day, helping them in their grief as well as mine. This world of nursing can see the heaviest of days for families, and she cared for all of us with the most loving heart. She is an incredible, compassionate, strong, caring, intelligent nurse and the most deserving of this award
