The growth that I have seen over the years in her compassion, positivity, work ethic, and professionalism has stood out more than most nurses.
Halima has been an RN on our unit for many years, and I have had the pleasure of working alongside her as a peer and in multiple leadership roles. The growth that I have seen over the years in her compassion, positivity, work ethic, and professionalism has stood out more than most nurses. She takes pride in the care that she provides to patients and the culture that she helps uphold on the unit. Here are a few examples of how wonderful she is.

I witnessed Halima caring for a patient who was diagnosed with an illness that required the patient to not exert themself until the issue was stabilized. The patient was clearly becoming depressed. Halima advocated hard for comfort control for her patient from the provider. I witnessed her throughout this patient’s stay, giving back rubs and foot massages to help comfort the patient. What impressed me most with this patient is that I overheard Halima say, "We have to get you out of this room for a little while," and she got the patient into a wheelchair and spent time walking the halls and holding a conversation with the patient in an attempt to help them be less depressed. I could tell the patient was so appreciative of Halima taking the time to give individualized care and being truly empathetic towards the situation.

I watched Halima care for a patient’s family member while the patient was coding. Halima took the family into a private area and prayed with them. This was amazing to see because the patient’s family and Halima did not share the same religious beliefs, but Halima was able to provide the patient’s family with cultural compassion that fit their needs. This was a prime example of how Halima cares for the family members as well as the patients.

Halima is amazing at helping staff understand the Muslim culture by always being willing to speak about the dynamics surrounding healthcare in the Muslim community. I have personally learned many things from her that have helped me provide better care and interactions with patients and families of different cultures. She is a brilliant example of someone upholding the OhioHealth Diversity and Inclusion mission.
