While others were working on me, I caught Courtney's eye, who was closest to the door, and mouthed to her to please call my wife.
I went to Layton Hospital ER early in the morning and was admitted with a GI bleed. The admitting nurse was Courtney Bearnson, and she was exceptional on many levels. When she talked to me, she looked me directly in my eyes and listened, really listened to my questions and concerns. I had complete faith in her and trusted her implicitly to be my advocate and to be honest and forthcoming with my wife. At first, the bleeding was only evident with elimination. On the fifth trip to the bathroom, I blacked out and ended up on the floor. The CNA, Colby, who was standing by, acted quickly, and suddenly, about 12 people were in that small space. While others were working on me, I caught Courtney's eye, who was closest to the door, and mouthed to her to please call my wife. She did so and reassured her that I was being well taken care of. Seeing Courtney in that sea of bodies gave me a sense of calm. Because my hemoglobin was very low, once they got me back in my bed, I was given three units of blood. The decision was made at that time to transfer me to MKDH where they had the capability to do additional tests and procedures. The bleeding stopped, so I was sent home. Unfortunately, I was back in the LH ER later with more bleeding and was readmitted. Everyone who entered my room, including phlebotomists, diet techs, CNAs, RNs, and doctors, was exceptional. The Hospitalist I had the longest is Dr. M, who was outstanding. The bleeding (of unknown origin) stopped, and after 72 hours of no bleeding, I was discharged. I was fortunate on my second stay to have Courtney again as my RN, and when I saw her, a calm came over me again. I trusted her to be honest and to listen to me without making me feel she was too busy with other responsibilities, which I am sure were pressing. Courtney deserves to be singled out for being a great nurse and a great person who really cares for her patients' welfare and that of family members, and for being a great example of the staff at Layton Hospital. I cannot adequately express the gratitude and appreciation I have for her, her professionalism, and warmth. We have lived here for thirty years and watched Intermountain build this beautiful hospital for the communities surrounding it. We have a soft spot for Intermountain as my late mother was a diet tech at LDSH, my wife is a retired pathology tech at LDSH and IMC, our daughter is a current manager for laboratory billing, and a son-in-law who works in the Biorepository. Intermountain blood runs deep in our veins, and we are happy to say the Layton Hospital has not disappointed us. My wife and I can honestly say that we have not had a negative experience at Layton Hospital. The staff chosen is far exceeding any expectations we might have had. Courtney Bearnson, RN, is just one example of the many who have made a lasting impression on me and many members of my family. Please let the hospital administration know how much I appreciate the stellar staff who took care of me during my two admissions. You have put together a wonderful team in each and every department that makes Layton Hospital so special, on every level. Thank you.
