Carolyn spoke to them about that day and listened to their stories, honoring each one of them by listening and by thanking them for their service. Good medicine, maybe the best medicine.
One of the greatest honors I have as a nurse is caring for our veterans. Not only do we owe them all for our freedoms and way of life, but also for the sacrifices they have made. On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Carolyn not only led the set-up of the medical tent but also helped man the medical tent and care for the veterans and their family members who had issues with the heat (mainly). Not only did she work the bedside with triage, vitals, and paper charting, but she also saw to their emotional needs. Most were very elderly and were upset that they were missing the day’s activities, knowing that most would not be around for the next ceremony. For them, this was a big event, a chance to remember the beginning of the end of WWII and the liberation of Europe, and to be honored for their part in it. Carolyn spoke to them about that day and listened to their stories, honoring each one of them by listening and by thanking them for their service. Good medicine, maybe the best medicine. When they were done, she made sure they could get back with their family, that they had cold water to drink, and a pat on the back. For her leadership while planning this event, kindness, and compassion in caring for our veterans, I think she deserves a DAISY Award.
