I would like to nominate Adam Carpinello for this prestigious award. My friend needed help with a mental health crisis. I brought her to the ED; however, she was unsure if she wanted to stay. During the triage process, she became upset and was in a very compromised state of mind. Adam, who was not her nurse at the time, saw an escalating situation and intervened. He was able to gain my friends' trust, calm down an intense interaction, and secure what could have been a dire situation. He then continued to assess her mental condition in the ED room, all while making her feel more at ease.

Adam offered her food. He went to the cafeteria and bought her French fries, and light heartily joked about hoping she liked ketchup because he brought a whole handful back with him. Then, he found a topic that they both could relate to and had a wonderful conversation, easing my friend and making her feel heard and cared about in her moment of crisis. His shift had ended, yet he came back to our room, started her IV, and hooked her up to IV fluids to ensure she was hydrated. He stated that he “didn’t want to leave any loose ends from his shift”.

Adam demonstrated compassion, care, and genuine concern for my friend. The situation could have had a very different outcome if Adam hadn’t intervened. It is my hope that he is recognized for the above and beyond care and compassion he demonstrated and provided for her while we were there and under his care. This facility is lucky to have him.
