She was on his level and telling him, "I will be here when you wake up". I have never witnessed a more beautiful and compassionate moment in my 21 years of nursing.
When we found out my dad needed heart surgery, we were terrified. When we found ourselves in the CVICU, we were absolutely shaken. On the day of surgery, my dad, who is an intensely strong man who doesn't show emotions often, was so scared and anxious. Our nurse was the beacon of light in our storm. She kept repeating to him, "learn my voice". She educated us all every step of the way. When it was time to head to the OR, she held his hand and walked beside his bed as he wheeled off. She was such a source of comfort at that time. She was on his level and telling him, "I will be here when you wake up". I have never witnessed a more beautiful and compassionate moment in my 21 years of nursing. That moment I realized this nurse has more heart and passion for her role as an RN than I have ever experienced. I have been an RN for 21 years, and I have been a patient myself, and I cannot adequately put into words how her actions and presence in the moment resonated in me. Huguley Hospital has an amazing staff, but it is my opinion that this nurse shines beyond what is required of her role. She has been here during this journey every single step of the way.

My dad was moved to the PCU, where he has received outstanding care, but he still asks about this nurse. To our surprise, she stopped in to see him, and I have not seen my dad smile that intently in many years. There is one nurse who has made this nightmare livable and survivable, and that nurse is this one. During this experience, I have talked to my family about nursing. And she is what truly makes the difference between nursing and excellent nursing. Huguley needs to hold on to her tight!
