Keith spent a considerable amount of time working with the patient and family to de-escalate the situation and advocate for the family's presence at the bedside as needed.
Keith Dias began working here as a travel RN a few years ago and has since joined the permanent staff. One of the many reasons he chose to join this team is our dedication to patient-centered care. Keith honors this commitment to our patients by consistently providing trauma-informed care to our mental health patient population. One of many examples I could share with you includes treating a young patient experiencing a mental health emergency. The patient was psychotic and had become increasingly agitated during the stay. Keith spent a considerable amount of time working with the patient and family to de-escalate the situation and advocate for the family's presence at the bedside as needed. He collaborated with the attending team to ensure the patient was medicated appropriately. This patient was able to be discharged from restraints within a few hours, return to baseline, and maintain family at the bedside throughout the stay. I am proud that Keith recognized the value of keeping this patient and family together as a patient-specific intervention, especially given the patient's history. This is such a great example of actively listening to our patients, their stories, and meeting individual needs in the setting of an extremely busy emergency room. Keith routinely treats all his patients with this same compassionate approach, and that is extraordinary ER nursing.
