Caoimhe Lagan: "If I can make a small difference in someone's life when they require help the most, then that's all that matters, and it costs nothing to be nice."
I would like to kindly make a nomination to a nurse, Caoimhe, who cared for my late uncle, who was admitted to the acute care on Level 1. The compassion and care she showed us was second to none. My uncle had been found unresponsive and had low body temperature and was unclean, as he had not been washed or moved for nine hours until coming to the acute care. She took the time to carefully wash him as well as running to get urgent medication he required while ensuring we were kept up to date on information, all in addition to the other patients she had.

There was another nurse in a navy uniform who I think was a manager, and Caoimhe asked them for a bed for us to stay by his side and a food voucher, which was granted instantly. To say this nurse made a very difficult situation better was an understatement. I asked her at one point how she did her job, and her response was, "If I can make a small difference in someone's life when they require help the most, then that's all that matters, and it costs nothing to be nice."
This has stuck in my mind since.

Her caring and warm personality radiated to my family. This is not to say other staff wouldn't do the same, as it is a very busy environment. We had gone to the canteen for a coffee, and Caoimhe phoned to say my uncle's breathing has changed to return to the ward. We found Caoimhe sitting at his side holding his hand while he had been taking his last breath. Sadly, my late uncle passed away peacefully,y but was comfortable and we were by his side. We can't thank Caoimhe enough.
