She's the first to arrive in an emergency and often the last to leave, ensuring every detail is covered.
Haley is the kind of pediatric nurse every patient hopes to have and every coworker is lucky to work alongside. Her dedication, spirit, and selflessness resonate throughout our unit, leaving a lasting impact.
She works in a unit that sees it all: high-acuity patients, unpredictable events, big wins, and bittersweet goodbyes. She consistently shows up with heart and purpose, a positive light in a team that helps juggle personal struggles in a changing outside world alongside professional demands. She's the first to arrive in an emergency and often the last to leave, ensuring every detail is covered. She lifts others with simple yet meaningful gestures: a dropping off box of donuts just because while on standby, Valentine's Day surprises for her coworkers and even their children, playing leprechaun for her patients with gold sparkles and candy, speaking in a favorite character's voice while giving care, finding a special toy specific to her patient's interest. These small moments create connection, restore morale, and remind everyone that we are in this together.
Like most healthcare workers, Haley doesn't take snow days off and has worked two back-to-back code whites this year. Per usual, she showed up with a smile and a "we've got this" attitude. One of her patients was having a particularly rough day. The patient had a difficult procedure and was unable to leave the room due to monitoring via an intracranial bolt. Haley recognized her somber mood and realized her unhappiness was not solely because of her current medical status; she was devastated to be missing the snow. Between tasks, Haley snuck outside and made a mini snowman for her patient in a Styrofoam cup. It had all the details of a traditional snowman and immediately shifted the energy in the room. The tone of her entire admission shifted at that moment, and she was discharged with a smile on her face.
Haley embodies the magic of pediatric nursing and is a shining example of a Children's nurse. She is an inspiration and the epitome of what the DAISY Award celebrates, and I can think of no one more deserving.
