Edyan didn’t give up. After administering the patient’s scheduled medications, Edyan took the time to sit with him, listen, and understand his concerns.
I had the privilege of working alongside Edyan during the 2nd and 3rd quarter clinicals at St. Helena Hospital, and it quickly became clear to me that nursing is his true passion. Edyan is not one to shy away from challenges, and he consistently steps up when the situation demands it.

One instance that stands out involved a Spanish-speaking patient who was refusing to go for a CT scan because he was uncomfortable and reluctant to proceed. Despite efforts by the nurses and doctor to convince him, the patient remained firm about his decision. However, Edyan didn’t give up. After administering the patient’s scheduled medications, Edyan took the time to sit with him, listen, and understand his concerns. Through this conversation, Edyan discovered that the patient’s hospitalization was due to a work-related injury that had worsened because of uncontrolled diabetes. The patient revealed that his employer had threatened not to cover the costs of his hospitalization, leaving him feeling stressed and unsupported. This crucial piece of information was new to the healthcare team. Edyan promptly shared it with his assigned nurse, who communicated it to the appropriate parties.

Thanks to Edyan’s determination and empathetic approach, the patient eventually agreed to proceed with the CT scan. Together, Edyan and I transported the patient to the scanner, cracking jokes and sharing stories along the way to help ease his anxiety. This outcome would not have been possible without Edyan’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every patient receives the best possible care. His compassion, persistence, and ability to connect with patients are qualities that truly set him apart as a future nurse.
