I am nominating Sara Hendow to receive the DAISY Award for the care and support she provided during a recent hospital visit. I am 85 years old and have spent many days in the hospital in Virginia, Phoenix, and Florida. My wife and I have visited Northside many times over the past 10 years. There was never a time when we were disappointed with the care we received at Northside. I can't say that for many other hospitals across the country. However, there comes a time when someone rises to a level of excellence that exceeds expectations. Sara's care for me exceeded my expectations.

I was admitted to the hospital with several issues that deeply concerned me. At my age, I can't expect to live forever, but I do want to have a few more years. As the day went on, Sara attended to my every need and took an exceptional interest in my situation, determined to ensure that I received the care I needed. While I do not have all the details of my care that day, I knew that things were not going as expected. My blood pressure was out of control, and I was miserable knowing that something needed to get it under control. I had constantly been filled with fluids, and I thought it was not right, even though the doctor did not do anything to stop it. So, I met Sara and explained my concerns. She not only patiently listened to my diagnosis, but I also didn't know what was going on. After a short time, she told me that she would sit by my side all night if necessary, to ensure that I received the care I wanted and needed. She made phone calls to others on the staff and seemed to be frustrated by the answers. Eventually, she took the bull by the horns and did what she knew to be the right thing. After a while, my Blood pressure dropped to a reasonable level, and the water was stopped. I don't know what would have happened if she had not intervened. I think it was her persistence in helping me and giving me comfort that helped me recover. I am so impressed with Sara and am certain that she deserves this award.
