I am approaching the 3-year battle against cancer. I worked as a nurse for 10 years before becoming a physician; thus, I recognize and appreciate outstanding nursing. Nel was my nurse for three consecutive days, days that were challenging and transitional. Not only did she do a head-to-toe complete assessment, she learned the names of my family members and spent time with them while performing her nursing tasks. She put all of us at ease. She asked questions with respect, was consistently thoughtful, and kind. Many nurses here fulfilled that criteria, but somehow Nel was above the bar set by the overall exceptional staff. She stayed on top of things, always let me know about her breaks, came by to check in throughout the day, and made my stay ‘as good as it gets’. I was unable to eat then, when my diet allowed clear liquids, she ran to the kitchen before it closed to pick up a coveted popsicle for me.
