The day shift nurse told me Sadie went to the gift shop and got it for her when she came in for wound care. My patient adores it and calls it her “baby”.
I got a patient with advanced Alzheimer's. Wound Care was consulted for several advanced and painful pressure injuries. Between her wounds and IV accesses being wrapped up, she was covered in gauze and tape. She became restless and began to pull off these dressings. This went on for hours before the end of my shift. I was so desperate to distract her, I wrapped a bottle of shampoo in gauze for her to pick at. This was a temporary fix. When I came in, I fully expected her to have removed all her dressings, but instead she was holding a pink and blue stuffed sloth. The day shift nurse told me Sadie went to the gift shop and got it for her when she came in for wound care. My patient adores it and calls it her “baby”. As I write this, it is 0300 and my patient is sound asleep, holding this sloth. This was so considerate of Sadie, as she made this whole stay more tolerable for my patient.
