She stayed because she cared.
Our experience started with Katie when my son was admitted for asthma exacerbation secondary to influenza. From the start, she saw his labored breathing. Even at the PICU where he was transferred, some of his nurses have been hesitant to feel he was as severe as he was due to minimal breath sounds. She was a huge advocate for my son with the hospitalist, having him come in for evaluation and pushing for a worsening condition. Even more, he was being transferred during shift change. Katie stayed until the transport team arrived. It would have been fully understandable if she had gone home after a 12-hour shift, but she stayed because she cared. Kindness, compassion, and connection are starting to fade in healthcare, but Katie continues to excel in each of these traits.
