While the rest of the team addressed the clinical emergency, Katherine held the patient’s hand, looked her in the eye, and said, “You’re gonna be OK.”
I am honored to nominate Katherine, an exceptional cardiac thoracic nurse, for the DAISY Award. Katherine exemplifies the highest standards of nursing care, consistently demonstrating dedication, compassion, and expertise as a nurse here on 5NE.

From the moment patients enter our unit, Katherine ensures they receive the best possible care. One of the most remarkable aspects of Katherine's practice is her ability to combine technical proficiency. Katherine meets its challenges with unwavering professionalism with warm, caring demeanor that reassures patients and their families.

Katherine not only makes her patients feel welcomed and well cared for, but she also makes everyone who comes in contact with her feel loved and cared for. Whenever Katherine is overlap for us, she helps everyone with a smile and gets the job done. Katherine trains many new grads and nursing students, and many of them have applied for jobs here in 5NE, and I know it’s because of Katherine’s excellent training and care of her patients and the many students that have led them to a decision to be a 5NE nurse. Katherine’s knowledge and expertise are matched by her willingness to educate and support both patients and colleagues. Katherine is always ready to explain procedures, answer questions, and offer comforting words, making a significant difference in the patient's care, and is a valued team member who fosters a positive and collaborative work environment. Katherine is always willing to lend a hand, share knowledge, and her positive attitude and resilience inspire everyone around her, making her not only a skilled nurse but also a beloved colleague.

In summary, Katherine embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award. Her exceptional care, compassion, and commitment to her patients and team make Katherine a true DAISY Nurse. It is with great admiration and respect that I nominate Katherine Catapang for this prestigious recognition.

Katherine brings such a comforting presence to her patients and those she works with. She is kind, compassionate, dedicated, and goes the extra mile to make sure her patients get excellent care. She is both knowledgeable and approachable, making her a great resource for other staff. What stands out in my mind is the way she treats her patients like the important people that they are, and not just another person to take care of. Even in high-pressure situations, she keeps her cool and does her job confidently and efficiently. For other nurses, she is an inspiration, and for patients, she is a hero!

Katherine has worked on the evening shift on 5NE for 20 years. She always has a positive attitude and is patient with her patients as well as the students that she precepts. Katherine always offers help to other nurses and is a team player. She helps with tasks, starting IVs on difficult access patients, and also with problem-solving complex care issues that arise. It brings me both joy and comfort to work a shift with Katherine on the team.

If I could duplicate a nurse for our unit, it would be Katherine. She treats every patient as an individual, recognizing clinical changes and advocating for additional support when needed. She also goes out of her way to get to know each patient and their family, caring for their emotional state with the same dedication.

Recently, she cared for a patient with a heart failure exacerbation during an episode of Ventricular arrhythmia. While the rest of the team addressed the clinical emergency, Katherine held the patient’s hand, looked her in the eye, and said, “You’re gonna be OK.” The next day, when the patient recounted the story, she teared up and expressed how important Katherine’s presence was for her in that moment and how safe she felt. Katherine was also able to care for the patient's son, who is understandably very worried about his mother, explaining what was happening and what to expect.
Katherine also frequently precepts nursing students, helping guide their practice and inspiring them as they enter the field. Most of these students who Katherine precepts walk into the office towards the end of their clinical and ask whether there are openings on our unit.

5NE staff and patients are so very lucky to have Katherine on our team!
