This morning I walked on the unit and noticed two quite large boxes sitting on the West pod. Just a glance, it looked like two goody boxes filled with personal items, from clothes to snacks. I wondered what the purpose was, but went along my journey, hoping to capture this information later in the day.

About midday, Mady came up to me seeking assistance for a patient who was leaving against medical advice. The patient was becoming agitated with the staff and with his visitor. Mady remained calm through the entire process, keeping her focus on her patient’s safety. As she was wheeling her patient out of his room, she stopped at the nursing pod and gifted him with one of the boxes. As I wheeled out her patient’s visitor, she gifted her with the other box.

During the chaotic time frame when campus police were involved, Mady continued to display compassion, integrity, and service to her patient and his visitor. They were leaving AMA with no place to go, no plans for their next meal, and only an idea of where they would sleep that night.

Mady stayed with these two strangers until a cab was called. She ensured they had all their belongings and were as safe as she could make them.

After all the chaos and agitation, the patient thanked Mady for the care she provided, stating that she was excellent!
