Nadia was waiting for me in the early afternoon when I arrived on her floor. This was my first time as a hospital patient in 25 years, and the first time ever I was facing a potentially life-altering situation. Her calm professionalism was immediately evident, and her demeanor throughout my intake did wonders to soothe my concerns and instill in me the certitude that my care while a patient would be the best possible. Throughout the afternoon, she repeatedly checked back with me and answered my many questions with much candor and evident honesty, furthering my trust in the hospital. At the end of her shift, as I was preparing for transport to an MRI, she took the extra time necessary to prepare me physically and emotionally for what my life was going to be like during the coming days. For me, everything eventually went fine, and I'm sure a large part of the outcome was Nadia helping me get my mind right in those first crucial hours. Had I been her only patient, her treatment of me might not be particularly noteworthy; however, I was instead one of many for whom she had professional obligations that day. I realize I am nobody special, but Nadia treated me like I was.
