Her patience, sympathy, attitude, and knowledge helped turn what could have been a very scary and traumatic experience in the ICU into one of not only healing and recovery, but also gave me a deeper understanding of the trust and care provided by people in healthcare.
Recently, I was a patient recovering from open heart surgery at St. Anthony Hospital. Molly Geldermann’s face was the first one I saw when waking up post-op. I had never been under anesthesia before, and a tube in my throat could have been very alarming. However, Molly’s explanations and reassurances kept me calm. Her patience, sympathy, attitude, and knowledge helped turn what could have been a very scary and traumatic experience in the ICU into one of not only healing and recovery, but also gave me a deeper understanding of the trust and care provided by people in healthcare. Very few times in my life and in most people’s lives do we find ourselves having to completely entrust our wellbeing and life to someone else…especially to strangers. Healthcare workers accept that incredible burden of trust from those strangers, but they do it multiple times every day, day after day, year after year throughout their careers. My wife is an RN who retired after 52 years of service. Until my time in the ICU I don’t believed I truly understood the dedication and sacrifice she and other healthcare and first responders make for all of the “rest of us”.The rest of the staff were all exceptional, from housekeeping on up. But it was Molly who happened to be the one who was there when I woke up, gave me a sponge bath, wheeled me out to my car, and gave me a hug before I left. Those things plus so much more. To be honest, we even shed some tears. Thank you so much to Molly and the rest of the ICU staff.
