The care Brandon offered her was exceptional, and I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a nurse so tirelessly dedicated to their patient.
I’m writing to nominate Brandon for the DAISY Award. My sister and I are both nurses here at Beth Israel. I’ve worked here for 13 years, and she’s worked here for four years. We’ve never had to experience what we’ve had to experience over the past 4 to 6 weeks when our mom was found to be in acute liver failure and needed a liver transplant. She was given a liver, and the surgery was started. In the middle of the surgery, they realized that there was a problem with the donor's liver, and she was left hepatic and in need of an urgent donation. She was transferred to the surgical intensive care unit, and Brandon was her nurse.
All day, Brandon worked tirelessly to keep our mom alive. She became acidotic. She was bleeding. There were so many different things that Brandon had to navigate to keep her stable, and Brandon did it seamlessly. It is very clear that Brandon knows exactly what to do and can handle even the most stressful and complex situations with ease and grace. There were many times when Brandon could predict what was going to happen based on small changes in her lab values or in their clinical assessment of her, even before many of the physicians could.
Brandon also did a really good job explaining to my dad what was going on and offering support and encouragement to my sister and I during what is without a doubt, the most difficult 24 hours of our life. Brandon, luckily for us, was working a double shift and was there to take care of our mom from 7 AM until 11 PM. This meant Brandon was there when she started rapidly declining, and they had to urgently bring her to the OR for a washout because she was bleeding internally. Then Brandon was also there when a new liver was found, and they had to move up the surgery time because they weren’t sure she was going to make it to the original planned surgery time. Brandon supported all of us, but especially my mom. The care Brandon offered her was exceptional, and I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a nurse so tirelessly dedicated to their patient.
Brandon didn’t stop for a second - he was constantly evaluating and monitoring every single change. I truly believe if it weren’t for Brandon and his excellent care that, she would not have made it to the surgery. We are grateful for the care provided by everyone at the institution, but Brandon went above and beyond, and it is very clear that Brandon has been called to be a nurse. I do not doubt that every patient Brandon takes care of is cared for with their whole heart. Our mom survived the surgery, and we are eternally grateful for the additional years that this could give us and could give my kids with her as well. We thank all of the members of the BIDMC team, but especially Brandon, and that’s why we are nominating Brandon for this DAISY Award.
