Please believe all the staff were wonderful, but Malcom went way above and beyond and is amazing at his job.
When Malcom came into my room, his sweet, kind, and attentive manner immediately put me at ease. He immediately understood the situation and my distress. He always looked me straight in the eye when talking to me, letting me know he saw and heard me, and understood my concerns with patience. He was just incredibly kind, calm, professional, and very attentive. His respect, honest concern, and compassion for me came out in spades. It was a super busy night, and the ED was short-staffed with nurses. That never affected the quality, efficiency, and kindness of care he gave me. His respect for me was a shining example of how a patient should always be treated. He was respectful of me as a person in every way.
Before he performed any procedure or touched me in any manner, he first let me know exactly what he was going to do and why, always with my permission. I can't express how important this is to me and how often nurses in EDs do not do this. And he was busy. It was very clear he understood the need and value of this communication. Whenever he needed to leave the room, he let me know first, why, and exactly when he'd be back by. He was always back when he said he would be. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the ED and have rarely experienced this. It was clear to me that his communication between staff and the attending physician was clear and concise. He answered all my questions. When he didn't know the answer, he was sure to get it for me in a quick time.
Most of all, he was incredibly sweet and kind and showed me great grace, and smiled, all under a great deal of pressure to manage all of his responsibilities. I can't say enough good things about him. If it were up to me, I'd give him a DAISY Award for every minute I was in the ED. 4 hours is a lot of daisies.
