Mark Strauch is our hero and our guardian angel.
Our shift here at South Hospital started out with a rapid response. During the rapid response, the patient was stabilized and remained on the floor. One of the most unusual transformations occurred when this same patient's behavior changed to very disruptive, which initiated a "code grey".
Our hospital security personnel responded; they tried talking, reasoning, rationalizing, and making every effort to help this patient's situation, who was also a Baker Act at the time. No talking or reasoning helped; he became more disruptive, threatening, and with a high possibility of becoming violent. Our lead Security Officer and I spent many hours trying to calm the patient down, but medication did not help. The situation was somewhat calmer closer to the morning when it was decided to post a Security Officer to observe and render assistance should our caregivers need it, and also, to avert any sudden violent confrontation.
At approximately 0630 at the change of security shift, the Security Officer was no longer visible to the patient, the patient began to violently broke the closet door down, took his clothing, locked himself in the restroom, and hurriedly changed into his street clothes and quickly fled the room, meanwhile another "code grey" was announced. ANM Mark Strauch responded quickly to the "code grey" and tried vigorously to prevent the patient from leaving the facility or harming any of our caregivers. Mark acted with clear instinct, fully knowing the dangers posed to his fellow co-workers. This led to the patient's apprehension at the 3rd-floor elevator. Mark continued to assist until the Martin County Sheriff's officers arrived.
Mark Strauch is our hero and our guardian angel. Even when the MCSO failed to respond to the call earlier during the night, Mark did not waver or hesitate to help. Every caregiver I have spoken to since the incident has only had high praise for Mark. I personally want to thank you, Mark, for your valor, your courage, your strength, and your bravery in the midst of danger. You are unselfish and noble.
