Sharon, in her business casual outfit, stayed at the bedside with the patient throughout the delivery and held her hand until her support person got to our room. The patient was so grateful for the support she received from Sharon and couldn’t believe Sharon was our manager and was willing to do what she did.
Sharon is an exceptional leader. She has come to our unit and been a shining light. She listens to everyone and takes our thoughts and concerns into consideration. She currently manages Labor and Delivery and T4 Maternity.

Recently, her assistant manager in Labor and Delivery moved on to a new position, leaving her the sole leader for Labor and Delivery. She has stepped into a tremendous role, taking on many staff in Labor and Delivery, as well as juggling additional meetings and tasks that were previously managed by the assistant manager. She does all these things with a positive attitude and a smile on her face.

She works hard to ensure we can provide the best possible care to our patients each and every day. She genuinely cares for our patients and goes out of her way to make their stay better. She was able to obtain a mini-fridge for one of our long-term antepartum patients, so she could have her native food available whenever she wanted it, instead of having to eat our cafeteria food all the time. She has set up a laundry service for our long-term patients who may not live close to York Hospital, as we get transfers from all WellSpan hospitals of high-risk pregnancy issues.

Recently, a patient was hospitalized on our antepartum unit who was going to miss her work baby shower, and her family had not put anything together. Sharon went out of her way to get some decorations for the conference room and allowed the patient and her family to have a small gathering on the T4 unit.

Also, during a precipitous delivery with an unmedicated patient, the patient’s support person did not make it to the room for delivery. Sharon happened to be walking by the room and checked in to see if everything was okay, as the patient was screaming with pain. Sharon, in her business casual outfit, stayed at the bedside with the patient throughout the delivery and held her hand until her support person got to our room. The patient was so grateful for the support she received from Sharon and couldn’t believe Sharon was our manager and was willing to do what she did.

Sharon is willing to make accommodations for staff when family issues or things outside work cause scheduling conflicts by trying to rearrange schedules if possible. She thoroughly tries to assist staff in work-life balance and encourages use of our Oasis Room. Sharon makes herself available outside of her work hours if staff need anything work-related. Most of our staff can text her directly when/if there is an issue when she is not in the hospital. She is prompt at addressing concerns and fixing issues on the unit.

During the recent hospital change to latex foley catheters, it was mentioned to her that as a procedural area, Labor and Delivery should have a few of the prior non-latex catheters available should someone with a latex allergy present to Labor and Delivery. Sometimes we have patients who present to Labor and Delivery and are prepped for a cesarean section quickly, so not having non-latex things as readily available could cause harm to patients with a latex allergy. Sharon received approval for a few non-latex foley catheters to remain on the Labor and Delivery unit for this reason.

Sharon is willing to step in and provide care when we are busy. Recently, there were no nurses without a patient available to admit a scheduled cesarean section patient. Sharon jumped in and began the patient’s admission until a nurse was available to assume care of the patient. She asked all the admission questions and initiated fetal monitoring.

Sharon is an exceptional person and a great leader for our team. We appreciate everything she does for our unit and all the work she puts in to make sure our patients are receiving the best possible care!
