I am pleased to nominate Giovanna Rullo for the DAISY Award. Giovanna and I have had the pleasure of working together on 5East for about 7 months now. Since I met Giovanna, I knew she was a special nurse. Though newer to practice, Giovanna never failed to impress me with her use of safety behaviors and critical thinking. I am specifically writing this nomination after witnessing Giovanna provide extremely thorough, holistic care to a patient being discharged. This patient presented with complex social needs. Giovanna was frequently assigned the patient and went out of her way to laminate medication schedules and partner so closely with the family on the patient's care. She went above and beyond the standard teaching required. When a discharge date was assigned, Giovanna requested to care for him to ensure the discharge went as smoothly as possible. She reviewed all the education once more with the family, escalated the remaining concerns to the providers, and ultimately discharged the patient. Giovanna said, "I did all I could but wish I could have done more." That statement encapsulates what it's like to be a nurse sometimes, but I am confident in this patient's discharge due to Giovanna's efforts.
