I would like to recognize Megan Shoemaker for going above and beyond in the care and support she provided to my mom and our family while she was in the CCU. She had a 10-day stay in the unit, where Megan was her nurse for several of those days. While we had a positive experience with all of the staff, my family developed a special rapport with Megan. She advocated for my mom in all ways: pain control, heart rate control, diet, comfort, and all of our concerns and needs. She reminded me to be the family and focus on that, rather than being a mom caregiver or trying to do all the nurse things. Megan never made us feel like we were an inconvenience or asked too many questions. She was so attentive to all of our needs. She was very personable towards my family and treated them like her own. It brought me so much comfort to have Megan as my mom’s nurse, as well as having her in the CCU. When it came time to transition Mom to comfort care, she kept Mom and all of us informed throughout the process, weaned her oxygen at our pace, and wholeheartedly hugged my dad. Without a doubt, I know Megan did all that she could for my mom, but she did it in a genuine, loving, caring way. She did everything she could to make a grim process as positive and pleasant as possible. She will forever hold a special place in our hearts as mom’s nurse. From a coworker's perspective, I’ve often witnessed this exceptional nursing care with Megan. She has such a special way with patients and their families. I feel so fortunate and blessed that Mom got the same care I had seen so many times before in the unit. Her actions, compassion, and genuine care, and the place she holds in our hearts make Megan a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.
