Jerwin Garcia, RN, said: "I like to teach the new staff here," the cardiac monitoring/telemetry unit at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. As a recent patient on this unit, I experienced first-hand Mr. Garcia's competence in nursing care and teaching skills. He has an infectious enthusiasm, and this approach to nursing care is visible in the unit. His efforts to teach new staff are pretty productive. He told me he also works at UCLA Medical Center, where he learned so much. This dynamic of enthusiasm for ongoing learning and education, combined with teaching that new learning, bodes well for Mr. Garcia's career and his patients, coworkers, and work sites. It is a win-win for all involved. Awaiting discharge from the cardiac monitoring unit, Jerwin’s positive approach and competence were especially evident. There were some delays in getting medical clearance for my discharge and some mild confusion about a new medication. Jerwin was on top of these issues, requiring several hours of involvement while caring for his other patients. Calmly and patiently, he communicated with the necessary staff to clarify and resolve the problems. People skills, genuine concern, and caring go a long way.
Thankfully, I was discharged home without too much undo asked due to Mr. Garcia's persistence and hard work—a final note. Kaiser patients are given an after-visit summary or AVS at the end of each medical appointment, including hospitalizations. In all my years as a utilizer of Kaiser's medical care services, any provider has spent much time productively reviewing an AVS. Jerwin highlighted and explained key elements in the AVS, including medication changes, follow-up appointments, and how and where to get more information. I was very pleasantly surprised with all these. Thank you, Mr. Garcia!
