She was so empathetic and made me feel heard, understood, and not alone.
My grandfather had fallen and broken his shoulder, and a week later, he was not able to walk. He was acting out of character, seeing things and not being his usual sweet self. My sister and I brought him to the ER, and after a full day, they were ready to send him home with a catheter that we were told could not be removed. I asked to talk to someone to get help. It was a new and scary experience. I worried about taking him home and was told I needed to make a decision. That’s when Sue came in to discuss our options for going home. On the verge of tears, I said I needed to step out. Sue followed me out, and as I broke down in tears in the middle of the ER hallway, Sue held me as if she knew me and reassured me that we would get him taken care of. She was so empathetic and made me feel heard, understood, and not alone. Due to his insurance, our options were limited. He could possibly qualify for the Behavior Health Unit; however, this was not a decision I could take lightly. Sue understood that. As I went with the Behavioral Health tech to interview my grandpa, Sue sat outside the door. She called the doctor, who came and talked with my grandpa and me. He said he would take care of him, and he did just that. He was moved to a room that night. She continued to advocate for both our family and my grandpa. She has continued to check in, going above and beyond for all of us to find answers and guidance. I am so grateful for Sue. Had she not come to us, I don’t know what would have happened if I had tried to take him home that night. It’s been a week. While we have had many nurses and doctors who have been wonderful to him, Sue deserves recognition. She has even provided guidance for when it’s time for him to go home. My grandpa can now stand again and is walking. Thank you, Sue – I can’t express how much we appreciate you and how much you mean to our family.
