A few weeks ago, Dr. G was rounding on a patient. The patient was an elderly lady who was there with stomach issues i.e. constipation. The nurse was present in the room, and they both noticed the little lady seemed to be “scratching” her bottom. She withdrew her hand and had a large stool. Dr. G thought to herself, “Here I am, the doctor, but I stepped back with a look that was probably one of shock.” This is the very moving part…Dr. G said the nurse calmly walked over, took the stool from the patient, wrapped it up and disposed of it. She then took some cloths to clean the patient up and said, “Now I bet you’re going to feel so much better!” Dr. G described her thoughts this way (and I took notes as she was sharing because I wanted to get it right – it was so touching)…”I felt like God was telling me and showing me that this is what nursing is all about. These are the real heroes. How she dealt with that situation- she was so calm, it just blew my mind. I felt like I needed to do something to thank that nurse.”
