I bet she doesn't even realize what a difference she made for him. She seemed like a natural caregiver.
Jay was a stand-out nurse in a staff that was really good, thorough and caring during our 2 days at Ochsner, Kenner. My husband has suffered blood loss and blood transfusions for a year now and has been treated with good medical care and finally a balloon endoscopy to reach an ulcer in his small bowel. It's hard to fully explain what a difference that nurse Jay made in his recovery. She came into his room, listening to what he had to say, encouraged him to thoroughly explain in his words what pain the low blood levels caused him, and helped him separate that from the pain he was feeling from the cauterization and endoscopy procedure. She was upbeat but serious. She listened to him, even though his hearing is weak, and he is deaf without hearing aids. She asked for permission and pressed on his abdomen to make sure he was not hurting there. He was not. That was literally hands-on care. She wasn't afraid of his complaints, even though she didn't have an answer for all of them. He has been stuck and prodded and scoped so much. I cannot tell you how much it meant for him to be touched in a diagnostic way, just feeling his abdomen to check for pain meant a lot. I bet she doesn't even realize what a difference she made for him. She seemed like a natural caregiver. And you know, it really didn't take that much more time for her to be so thorough. She left my husband feeling heard and in good humor.
