Our baby boy was born prematurely when my water spontaneously broke at 34 weeks. This caused him to have to stay in the NICU where he received oxygen, tube feedings, IV nutrition/ fluids, and phototherapy. As a NICU nurse myself, it was really difficult to let go of control and allow other nurses to take over his care. Evelyn was a wonderful nurse not only to my son, but also to me. She treated me like a mom rather than a nurse. She checked in on me even when she wasn’t assigned to my baby. She went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed each time she was there. A few of these things included setting up a pump at his bedside for me, providing me with extra pumping supplies for home, and setting up a camera so that I could see him when we weren’t there. She even came to check on me a handful of days after birth when I had to have an unexpected procedure and was recovering in postpartum. All of these things spoke volumes to me and my husband and made us feel confident in the care he was receiving when we were away. Every gesture she made was with intention. She truly cared for us as if we were her own family, and we feel indebted to the love and care she has given not only us, but also our son. We are so grateful that Evelyn is part of our son’s story, and we will forever remember her compassion and excellence!
