Congratulations to DAISY Award recipient Todd Herritz, BSN, RN! Todd is an Outpatient Mental Health Intensive Case Management. “Todd works in the Mental Health Intensive Case Management program. We are a multidisciplinary team that provides mental health and intensive case management services in Veterans' homes to Veterans who have serious mental illness. Todd was on a routine visit to an 82-year-old Veteran who has no family or friends, and the MHICM team is his only support. The Veteran appeared and reported feeling ill, so Todd administered a home COVID test, with a positive result. Todd advocated with the Veteran's primary care team for a prescription of Paxlovid, picked up the prescription, delivered it to the Veteran's home, cooked him soup, and helped clean his apartment. Because the Veteran frequently forgets to take medication and rarely answers his telephone, Todd advocated with the MHICM team for twice daily visits, in the morning and late afternoon, so the team could prompt the Veteran to take twice-daily Paxlovid and check in on him. Within 3 days, the Veteran showed significant improvement. In addition to the medical care provided, it was evident that the knowledge that there were people who genuinely cared about him buoyed the Veteran's spirits and aided his recovery. This is the kind of thing that Todd does routinely - going far above and beyond what is asked or expected in order to improve the quality of life of those he serves as well as anyone else he comes into contact with.”
