We witnessed her display patience and kindness with the Veteran, always taking extra time and listening with empathy and compassion.
Congratulations to Margaret Hamann, BSN, RN, who received the DAISY Award! Margaret is a Prep/Recovery and PACU nurse whom two colleagues nominated. Her nomination is as follows: “Today, I took care of a female Veteran with a complicated mental health history, chronic pain, and PTSD, which can contribute to a challenging postoperative course. We all go above and beyond in surgical services, but what I witnessed today was incredible. I called to report to the PACU at the end of our procedure to give a brief report and to alert them to our imminent arrival. I shared some of the patient’s medical history so they could be prepared and assign a staff member accordingly. Margaret Hamann was the RN assigned to the patient’s care who demonstrated more than one of the I-CARE values. She listened to the Veteran and cared for her in the recovery room for a period of ~ 3 hours. We witnessed her display patience and kindness with the Veteran, always taking extra time and listening with empathy and compassion. Margaret treated the Veteran with a great deal of respect. She actively listened to the patient’s current pain experience and about the pain she had experienced with previous surgeries. Margaret offered the Veteran the opportunity to talk about her pain and worked with the Veteran to develop a plan for post-operative pain control. She did not let the veteran go up to her room until her comfort was achieved.”
