I knew as soon as Skylar introduced herself for the first time that I was in confident and caring hands.
My life was forever changed after my second mammogram in 2024. No risk factors, no family history, I was blindsided. Triple positive, so the treatment plan was overwhelming and absolutely terrifying. I had absolutely no idea what to expect "chemo" days to entail, but I couldn't have lucked into a better care team. I knew as soon as Skylar introduced herself for the first time that I was in confident and caring hands. I quickly introduced myself as the stubborn patient who wanted nothing to do with a port and shared my goals. Keep hair, no port, and come out of this healthier and stronger than when you started. I told her that, other than that, she could do whatever she had to do to me. She just smiled and gave me a very supportive "I completely understand, and we've got this" face.

The first day had its bumps. I had to get stuck 4 times. I honestly was terrified I was heading for a port. She, without hesitation, was extremely supportive and encouraging. She said we take it one week at a time, we hit, reset, hydrate, and see what next week brings. She has no idea how much that simple statement meant. The second week, IV success on the first try and she provided me with assurance that I'd meet my goal. She is so personable and easy to talk to. She takes my wit and smart comments in stride and very quickly was comfortable dishing it back. Honestly, chemo days aren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. Lots of laughs, I'm getting a ton of travel inspiration, she makes Thursdays feel like social visits more than chemo infusions.

I decided to attempt cold capping for a lot of reasons. I am not sure I would be as successful as I am without her. She has given me inspiration through people she knows who had success; she jumped right in those first few caps when she saw my mom struggling. She gives constant encouragement and makes me feel like I am not only the only patient at the center but also the most important. I sincerely feel not only supported, but respected. She is extremely smart! She consistently offers tips and tricks when labs are trending up or down. She gives assurance that a high or low isn't a concern at this time. I am not sure I would be as successful with my treatment without her by my side.

Everything happens for a reason, and I truly believe Skylar was meant to be part of my journey. I started treatment planning on doing my 12 weeks of Taxol/Herceptin at the Kenwood location and then moving to Western Ridge for my every 3-week Herceptin infusions after. I simply cannot imagine not having her support for the remainder of the infusions. She is a huge part of my success, and I have every intention of returning to Kenwood until the end of my treatment. I want to ring that bell with those who have truly made an impact and have supported me tirelessly on this journey. Skylar, you are an amazing person and caregiver. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING UP WITH ME!
