My 82-year-old uncle, the primary caregiver for his wife, who suffers from dementia, was recently admitted to the pulmonary unit. I came from out of state to help until their daughter arrived. We were lucky to have Michelle as his nurse for most of his stay when he wasn't in ICU. She was great at caring for him, but I remember her as a friend looking out for me and always ready to offer reassurance and a hug. They had transferred my uncle to the ICU, which is a more difficult area to keep tabs on my aunt. I went to the restroom near the elevators and asked her to wait there. When I came out, she had vanished. I took a quick look in the lobby and parking lot. I went to the ICU but doubted that she'd be able to find her way there. The ICU staff called security, who alerted the hospital staff. I decided that my aunt may have tried to find the pulmonary unit because she liked everyone working there. She'd talk on the way home each night about what a great group of people they were. When I reached the pulmonary unit, they had figured out who the missing person was.
