I truly believe that Jackie set our entire stay up for success with her proactive and thoughtful actions.
Jackie deserves to be recognized! She was an incredibly helpful, reassuring, and fun partner during what were our darkest days after C's leukemia diagnosis. Jackie quickly won over C (and our hearts) with her genuine and gentle approach, all while providing excellent care. Jackie effortlessly made his care and our stay easier and more comfortable, including countless times where she helped us escape (even if just mentally) from the grips of a cancer diagnosis. She always made sure that we understood what was happening, and why, to make sure we were comfortable with the situation - this sounds simple, but during those first few days of sleepless nights and confusing new jargon, it was priceless. Jackie was the only nurse that would naturally stay with C in his room so we could attend the "rounds" discussion with larger team in the hallway.
Looking back, this was an incredible gesture and was even more meaningful that she did so without prompting. She knew exactly what all family members needed in that moment. And, most importantly, C preferred being with her! Jackie helped C feel comfortable and safe in a new and scary environment, a huge milestone given how uncomfortable he was. I truly believe that she set our entire stay up for success with her proactive and thoughtful actions. As a true testament to her impact on C, Jackie was one of the only nurses that he would play his guitar and sing for. Unfortunately, Jackie only cared for C for the first few days of his stay. Despite this, he would ask about her during our stay in the hospital and *still* asks about her now that we’re home. Is there a better judge of character than a sick 4-year-old?!? I think not. Thank you, Jackie!
