He escalates for anticipatory medicines and gives them to ensure patients are not agitated or in pain.
I have witnessed this nurse go above and beyond for his patients innumerable times, particularly for patients who are palliated whilst in the ED. We don’t get dying right a lot of the time in medicine, especially in an overcrowded understaffed emergency department. Still, I have had the pleasure to work with Steven on several palliative cases, and not only can he recognise death, he then fights for that patient to have the best care they can have under the circumstances. He escalates for anticipatory medicines and gives them to ensure patients are not agitated or in pain. He has fought for the palliative care team to come and review patients and organised transfers to hospice care; he ensures these patients are in as private a cubicle as he can muster in the chaos of A&E and simultaneously supports the families throughout the process, including after death. Let me stress that these are far from ideal situations for patients, their families, or ED staff. Yet, Steven manages each case professionally, giving patients and their families as much care and dignity as they face one of the most difficult situations humans can face. Steven is a credit to his profession and deserves recognition for going above and beyond while most of us are just fighting to keep our heads above the murky waters of A&E.
