Without KC's attentiveness and immediate action, I am certain the baby would have had a very poor outcome and even death.
One of our nurses in the Peds ED, "KC" Kathleen Gibson, who is retiring soon after about 30 years here, probably saved a baby's life on January 2, 2025. She was in the elevator going home after her shift and saw a family with a 6-week-old baby in a car seat get into the elevator on her way out of UMC.

She looked into the car seat and saw that the baby was blue and unresponsive. She immediately sprang into action and checked a pulse, and provided an assessment of the infant. There was no pulse or respiratory drive, started CPR in the elevator and brought the baby right back to the Peds ED into the critical care room. She immediately notified staff and started the code team response.

From KC's swift recognition and thoroughness, the team was immediately available to provide life-saving care, and ROSC was achieved. Although the baby is still in the PICU, she is expected to make a meaningful recovery. Without KC's attentiveness and immediate action, I am certain the baby would have had a very poor outcome and even death. Thank you, KC, for your dedication and attentiveness to the pediatric patients.
