I had the awesome pleasure of having this "one of a kind," touched by an angel, nurse, while I was a patient. When I met her, I had just come in that day, and my medications weren't effectively addressed. My pain was at a 10/10 on the pain scale. I started throwing up violently and was crying so hard. After placing a cold wash cloth on my head, she said to me, "What's your favorite color?", and I said it's blue. She said to pick a sticker and a marker. I did both. Then she sat next to my bed and began to dig into her craft bag. I asked her what she was doing. She said, "I can't tell you or it wouldn't be a surprise, silly." She talked to me the whole time about different things, and it took my mind off the agony I was in, at least during that time. Then she showed me what she had made for me. She had actually taken the time to bedazzle my drinking cup. I almost started crying because this nurse, who literally didn't know me at all, decided to take the time to distract my mind from the pain I was in, and made me smile by going that extra mile.

The next night, my meds still weren't sorted out, but they did prescribe a pain cream for my back and legs. She said to let her get the meds passed out to the other patients, and she would come back and rub it on my back and legs. Within the hour, she was back. She had me put some sleep music on, and she rubbed that cream on me and covered me up. I finally slept that night. It was my first night of sleep in the 4 days I had been there. She deserves an award because she is very selfless and truly cares about her patients.

I am sorry it has taken me a little while to get this turned in. I have been hospitalized numerous times since this stay. I hope that Nurse Norkelia realizes her kindness and care changed the trajectory of my healing process. She truly is not only an asset to Patricia Neal, but to the nursing profession as a whole and would be an outstanding training Nurse for others to learn from, model, and aspire to be like.
