Natalie is a nurse on the behavioral medicine floor. She stands out as a person who shows REAL empathy for the patients she encounters. She shows this by sitting with them to have a genuine conversation rather than just doing her assessment and moving to the next patient. Many times, Natalie will be seen sitting in a room with a patient who is struggling, and the patient may not even be assigned to her. Another way she demonstrates the Intermountain values is through her dedication to teamwork. When she works in the Access Center and doesn't have any patients, she will come over to the inpatient unit and ask the rest of the staff what she can do to help. Specifically, one night I had a group of patients that were high acuity and had a new patient arrive. Natalie asked if she could help with the admission so I could focus on the other patients who were on my team. She doesn't complain about any task she is asked to do. She just does it and does it well. It goes without saying she is an amazing nurse. Everyone in the unit agrees that she is absolutely amazing and one of the most caring people we have ever met. 

Natalie's actions are contagious. When she is working, it is hard not to try to emulate her. She is well-respected by everyone in the department. One amazing thing about her is her humility. She doesn't act like she is better than anyone and does her job well because it is the right thing to do. I am amazed by her willingness to do the right thing all the time with no thought of rewarding herself for going above and beyond what is required. Her actions make others want to do better and be better. Her patients feel like they are treated with the respect they need and deserve. When you are treated with empathy as a behavioral health patient, you are able to heal faster. The way that Natalie treats her patients opens the pathways to healing for anyone under her care. She is exactly what the DAISY award defines.
