Her empathy, sensitivity, and commitment to patient- and family-centered care during such a vulnerable moment reflect the highest standards of nursing.
I am honored to nominate Katelyn Beck for the DAISY Award. Katelyn recently returned to work after having a baby and has seamlessly resumed her role, providing the same exceptional care she is known for, even while balancing the demands of being a new mother.
During one of her recent shifts, Katelyn cared for a patient whose family was grappling with the difficult decision of whether to put their loved one on comfort care. The family was understandably confused and unsure of what to expect, as they had not yet received all the necessary information. As the patient’s condition deteriorated, with her oxygen levels dropping and the possibility of intubation looming—something the family had expressed they did not want—Katelyn stepped in with remarkable compassion and clarity. She spent the night talking with the family, explaining the options, the possible outcomes, and the process of death, should their loved one not improve. As the patient continued to decline, the family was still in shock, but Katelyn made sure the patient was comfortable and guided the family, encouraging them to be with their loved one in her final moments. The family had religious beliefs that required the patient to face a certain direction, and Katelyn, without hesitation, accommodated their wishes, carefully moving all the tubes and equipment to make it possible. Katelyn stayed with the family and the patient until she passed, ensuring that both were supported during this emotional and heartbreaking time. Afterward, she allowed the family the space and time to care for their loved one, giving them the opportunity to grieve and say their goodbyes in their own way before the nursing team continued their work.
Her empathy, sensitivity, and commitment to patient- and family-centered care during such a vulnerable moment reflect the highest standards of nursing. Katelyn’s ability to guide this family through the difficult process of losing their loved one with such grace and respect is truly extraordinary. Her return to work, following maternity leave, has only strengthened her dedication to her patients and their families. Katelyn’s actions during this experience left a lasting impression on the family, and it is clear that she continues to think about them and the profound impact of that night. She is an incredible nurse, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the DAISY Award.
